Port Tampa Bay marked a historic milestone on Thursday, April 9, 2026, with the arrival of the ZIM Canada—a containership that established new benchmarks for both carrying capacity and gross tonnage at Florida's largest and most diversified seaport .

The vessel docked with 11,900 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), nearly 2,000 more than any previous ship handled at the port. Stretching 1,083 feet in length and registering 114,643 gross tons, the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel also stands as the largest by gross tonnage ever to call at Port Tampa Bay . Built in 2022 by Chinese shipyards, the 132,069 dwt vessel is owned by Seaspan Corporation and operates under long-term charter to ZIM Integrated Shipping Services .

Port officials emphasized that the record-setting arrival underscores the facility's escalating capability to handle larger, high-capacity containerships and validates the strategic importance of ongoing infrastructure investments .

The timing aligns with Port Tampa Bay's most ambitious undertaking: the $1.3 billion Tampa Harbor Navigation Improvement Project. The initiative will deepen the shipping channel from 43 feet to 47 feet, extend the entrance channel by 1.9 miles, and remove 22 million cubic feet of material to accommodate deeper-draft vessels . Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with completion targeted for 2034.

This week brought critical federal support for the project, with Representative Kathy Castor announcing $10 million in federal funding to advance initial planning, engineering, and design work . The investment will support Phase 1 activities as the multi-phase project moves toward implementation.

Complementing the dredging initiative, the port is expanding its crane capabilities, with six post-Panamax cranes expected to be operational by year-end 2026 .

Port Tampa Bay has demonstrated remarkable cargo growth trajectory. In fiscal year 2025, the port handled 32 million tons of cargo spanning petroleum products, dry bulk commodities, containers, breakbulk, and project cargo. Container volumes have surged more than 300 percent since 2018, with nearly 263,000 TEUs moving through the facility last year . The port also handles 45 percent of Florida's gasoline and jet fuel supply, underscoring its critical role in the state's energy security.

The cruise sector is equally robust. Port Tampa Bay processed a record 1.66 million cruise passengers in 2025—the highest total in its history—and officials project 1.8 million passengers for 2026 .

However, expansion faces regulatory headwinds. On March 19, 2026, Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation blocking a proposed new cruise terminal in Manatee County that would have been located outside the Sunshine Skyway Bridge—an infrastructure constraint that limits the size of cruise vessels able to enter the port . City officials continue exploring alternative terminal locations to support cruise sector growth.

The ZIM Canada call represents more than a record—it signals the port's evolution into a deeper-water gateway capable of accommodating the next generation of containerships while the $1.3 billion federal-state partnership works to permanently transform Tampa Bay's maritime infrastructure .
